To back up all data of a Microsoft 365 group, the Global admin service account used for the backup must be a member of the group. For non-dynamic groups, Keepit automatically makes the Global admin a member. However, since a dynamic group differs from other Microsoft 365 groups in that it uses rules to determine group membership, Keepit is unable to make the Global admin a member. This means that you must make sure that the Global admin meets all the membership rules that are applied to the group so that it becomes a member. This will ensure that all dynamic group data is backed. For more about dynamic membership, please refer to Microsoft's documentation.
If the Global admin is a member, the following will be backed up:
- All group data including the group's files, conversations, calendars, and plans
- The team's public and private channels including the team's channel posts, wiki pages, and files
If the Global admin is an owner but not a member, the following will be backed up:
- All group data except for plans
- The team's public and private channels including the team's channel posts, wiki pages, and files
If the Global admin is neither a member nor owner, the following will be backed up:
- All group data except for plans
- Public channel data except for the team's channel posts
- Private channels will NOT be backed up
Notes
- After you create your connector and the service account has been made a member of dynamic groups, you can remove the Global admin role from the user. For more information, see: Removing the Global admin role from the backup service account
- When you restore a dynamic group, it will become a Microsoft 365 group with assigned membership.
