Keepit 2.0 Release Notes

April 24, 2019

We are very excited to announce the release of Keepit 2.0. This is a major release, which greatly extends data coverage, enhances user experience, and introduces many great new features.

In particular, we have added full Microsoft Teams coverage and significantly extended our SharePoint coverage, making us now one of, if not the best, cloud-to-cloud backup solutions for Microsoft data.

We have also advanced the security and reporting capabilities of our solution with our improved audit log and new job monitor page. Users can now not only keep better track of all users' activity but also see all connector activity.

And finally, our new deleted files view and subfolder search make finding and recovering data easier and quicker than ever.

New Features & Improvements

New Data Types Backed Up

Office 365 data coverage has been greatly extended in this version. Please refer to our guide How to upgrade your backup for Keepit 2.0 to see how to back up these new data types.

  • SharePoint
We now cover the vast majority of SharePoint data.
    The new backup includes:
    - Lists in addition to Document Libraries.
    - Metadata, permissions and custom views, columns and content types. This means that when data is restored back to a SharePoint site, the data that defines how this data is shown and who has access to it is all in tact. This functionality makes Keepit one of the few backup services that can restore SharePoint data together with its many integral parts.

For an overview of all the SharePoint data items we now cover, see: What SharePoint data can be backed up?

If you are an existing customer, please note that the new SharePoint data type replaces the old SharePoint Sites backup, which covered only Document Libraries. If you previously backed up Sites, this data can now be found under Sites (Legacy). We recommend you enable the new SharePoint backup, as we will only support Sites (Legacy) for 1 year from the release date. For more information, please refer to this guide: How to upgrade your backup for Keepit 2.0

  • Teams
Channel chat messages and Wiki pages are now backed up – making us the only backup solution to offer full Teams data coverage. Although they cannot be restored back to their original locations, Channel chat messages and Wiki pages can be previewed, copy-pasted out, and downloaded as raw files. The new data will be backed up in the existing Office 365 Groups data type, which has been renamed to Groups & Teams.

  • Public Folders
All messages in Public Folders as well as messages in sub-folders are now backed up. Even though this shared mailbox system is being phased out by Microsoft, we have added coverage since many companies still have enormous amounts of important data in these folders.

Job Monitor Page

We have introduced a new area to Keepit, which shows a full overview of all connector activity. Here you can find all of the connectors' past, current, and scheduled jobs—the actions taken by Keepit to perform a backup or a restore.

With our many filtering options, you can search for and filter down specific activity by connector, job status, and job type, and use the free text search filter. You can also limit the results to a specified time span or to specific dates.

From the description field of each entry, you can open a window with details about the job, such as the number of files backed up, the size of files restored, and a list of files that failed to restore.

You can also download a job report as a CSV file.

For more about the Job Monitor page, see: How to view the Job Monitor

Revamped Audit Log

We have completely revamped the Audit Log page and added a lot of new functionality. In particular, there are now many new filtering options, allowing you to search by area and type of action, time span, and with a free text search filter. Additionally, you can now download an audit log as a CVS file.

For more about the Audit Log page, see: How to view the audit log? and What events does the audit log record?

Subfolder Search

We have implemented a subfolder search, which allows you to search any number of levels on your cloud tenant—from the whole tenant to a few subfolders.

We are very excited about this unique feature especially since not even Microsoft supports such a powerful search function.

For more about this feature, see: Locating data for recovery or to share

Deleted Files View

With our new Deleted Files function, you can view all the data that ever existed on a tenant and which was backed up by our solution. This will allow you to easily locate deleted users, folders, or objects—all of which can then be directly shared, downloaded, or restored.

Combined with the subfolder search, you can do a full tenant search including any object that every existed at any point in time.

For more about this feature, see: Locating data for recovery or to share

Variable Retention Periods

We have introduced the possibility to limit the retention period on individual connectors. This means that if you have certain data that cannot be retained for the full retention period you have purchased, you can create a separate connector for this data and then set a cap on the retention period. This new feature is especially valuable to companies that have policy requirements to delete client data within a certain period of time.

Other Features

  • A filter field was added to the Restore Connector dialog to help you quickly find which users' data you want to restore.
  •  A re-authenticate icon was added to the Configure Connector dialog so that you can easily re-authenticate a connector. This will allow you to renew your credentials in case you accidentally logged into Keepit with the wrong Microsoft account.
