This article describes how OneDrive data is restored, including restore options, handling of timestamps and duplicates, and whether items are deleted during the process.

Item Restore

Item restore: In-place

Default behavior: All OneDrive items are restored to their original location.

Modified items: Modified items (same name, different timestamps) will be overwritten.

Timestamps behavior:

  • Connectors created before Keepit 4.7.0 (October 2021):

    • Files are restored with their original modification time.

    • Creation time reflects the time of restore.

    • Folders are restored with the restore date.

  • Connectors created after Keepit 4.7.0 (October 2021):

    • Files and folders are restored with both their original modification and creation times.

Deletion behavior: When performing an item-level, items present in OneDrive but not in the selected snapshot will not be deleted.

Item restore: To new folder

You can choose to restore your OneDrive data to a separate, newly created folder.

Folder location: A new folder will be created at the root level of your OneDrive, named: Keepit_Restore_[date]

Folder requirement: The folder must still exist on the tenant. If it has been deleted, create a new folder with the same name before starting the restore.

Deletion behavior: Items present in OneDrive but not in the selected snapshot will not be deleted.

Restore Wizard

Restore Wizard: In-Place

Handling duplicates

When restoring in place using the Restore Wizard, you can choose how to handle duplicates.

Modified items — meaning files with the same name but different timestamps — will be handled according to the selected duplicate-handling option:

  • Skip duplicate items

Modified items will be skipped.

  • Rename duplicate items

Modified items will be added and renamed. The suffix "(1)" will be added to the filename.

  • Overwrite existing items

Modified items will overwrite the existing OneDrive items.

Items with the same name and same timestamps will always be skipped, regardless of the selected option.

Deletion behavior: In all cases, items present in OneDrive but not in the selected snapshot will be deleted.

Restore Wizard: To new folder

You can choose to restore your OneDrive data to a separate, newly created folder.

Folder location: A new folder will be created at the root level of your OneDrive, named: Keepit_Restore_[date]

Deletion behavior: Items present in OneDrive but not in the selected snapshot will not be deleted.
